The Commandant Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC), Major General Eric Kinuthia, officially inaugurated Junior Joint Command and Staff Course No. 100 of 2025 (100/25) on Monday, January 13, 2025, at Langata Barracks campus, Nairobi. The event marked a significant milestone as the college celebrated its 100th course since inception.
In his remarks, Maj Gen Kinuthia hailed the occasion as a historic achievement for both JCSC and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), highlighting it as a testament to excellence, dedication, and success. He urged the course participants to honor the trust placed in them by their respective formations by embracing a culture of learning, selflessness, and commitment to their training.
“This course prepares you for future duties and responsibilities that demand the highest standards of professionalism. It is also a unique opportunity for personal growth,” he emphasized. Maj Gen Kinuthia assured participants of unwavering support from the management, faculty, and leadership.
Lieutenant Colonel Ambrose Macharia, the Head of the Junior Division (HOJD), underscored the transformative role of the course in shaping officers for dynamic and progressive command and staff roles. He encouraged participants to uphold integrity and work hard to honor JCSC’s centenary legacy.
As part of the centenary celebrations, the Commandant led a symbolic 100-minute walk starting from the Kenya Army Band Headquarters at Langata Barracks, proceeding through Kungu Karumba Road (Langata-Kibera Link Road), and back to the barracks. The walk involved senior directing staff, faculty members, management, and 60 course participants. A commemorative tree-planting ceremony was also held at the barracks grounds.
JCSC, established in 1983 as the Defence Staff College (DSC), trained its first cohort, Senior Joint Command and Staff Course 01 of 1984, with 20 Kenyan officers. Following its restructuring and renaming in 2022, JCSC became part of the National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K). Over the years, the college has trained more than 4,000 officers across 100 courses.
The Junior Joint Command and Staff Course is designed to equip participants, typically Majors and Captains from the Kenya Army, Kenya Air Force, and Kenya Navy, with the professional knowledge and skills needed for command and staff appointments.
The event was attended by the Chief Instructor and Deputy Commandant, Brigadier David Chesire, alongside senior directing staff and officers from JCSC and Langata Barracks.
