GOING GREEN AT GILGIL GARRISON

Kenya Army personnel at Kenyatta Barracks in Gilgil, have continued to upscale their efforts to grow trees in the military cantonment in a bid to ensure the area is well forested to help avert the devastating effects of climate change.

Led by General Officer Commanding Western Command Major General Jeff Nyagah, Gilgil Garrison Commander Brigadier Joel Cherutich, Army Special Operations Brigade Commander Brigadier Ahmed Saman the team planted over 11,000 trees of varied species.

Done in collaboration with Cooperative Bank of Kenya, the tree planting exercise is in line with the Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces His Excellency Dr William Ruto’s directive of accelerating the forest cover to combat climate change in the country.

Speaking during the exercise Maj Gen Nyagah commended the soldiers for their continued support of the programme and emphasized on the need to plant trees for a better future.

“We should take advantage of this rainy season and plant as many tress as possible. Endeavour to also encourage our families back at home to plant trees for a better sustainable future for our generations,” said Maj Gen Nyagah.
