ENHANCING KENYA’S MARITIME SECURITY THROUGH TRAINING

Kenya – United States Liaison Office (KUSLO) and the United States Naval Forces (NAVAF), in partnership with the Kenya Navy, conducted a Joint maritime operation in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) dubbed Cooperation Afloat Readiness Training (CARAT) from 10 to 16 March 2025.

The one-week exercise conducted by Kenya Navy Ship (KNS) JASIRI and KNS SHUPAVU focused on Monitoring Patrols and Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS)operations. The training exercise aimed at enhancing interoperability between the U.S maritime forces and the Kenya Navy.

Additionally, the exercise served as a valuable pre-cruise training, allowing the Kenya Navy sailors to conduct a wide range of critical drills designed to enhance their readiness in various operational scenarios and emergencies.

These drills enhanced the crew’s technical abilities and reiterated the importance of teamwork, communication, and leadership in maritime operations under stressful conditions.

By practicing these critical skills in a controlled yet realistic setting, the crew gained invaluable experience that will significantly improve their operational effectiveness in future maritime operations.

The CARAT initiative strengthens the operational capabilities of both the Kenya Navy and its U.S. counterparts, creating a robust framework for cooperative maritime security.
