The Assistant Chief of Defence Forces for Personnel and Logistics, Major General David Ketter, and the Joint Secretary of India’s Ministry of Defence, Shri Amitabh Prasad, co-chaired the Third Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) meeting between Kenya and India. This meeting took place in New Delhi on September 3, 2024.
The JDCC serves as a platform for discussing key issues of defence cooperation and developing effective roadmaps to strengthen the defence ties between the two nations.
During the discussions, Major General Keter highlighted the deep and longstanding bilateral relationship between Kenya and India, which dates back to the Indian Ocean trade routes and the shared struggle for independence.
He noted that defence relations, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Defence Cooperation signed in July 2016, have been mutually enriching and beneficial.
The MoU has provided a legal framework for cooperation in various defence areas, fostering continued collaboration.
Key topics discussed during the meeting included military cooperation, training, and enhancing the capabilities of the defence industries in both countries.
Additionally, Major General Keter paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Chief of the Indian Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti. They discussed enhancing interoperability, training, and exploring new avenues for operational collaboration, particularly in maritime security.
The Kenyan delegation also engaged with representatives of the Indian Defence industry in Delhi and Pune from September 3 to 5, 2024, gaining first-hand insight into the advanced capabilities developed in India.
