In the spirit of spreading Christmas compassion and embodying the true essence of the season, children of Mary Immaculate Rehabilitation Centre today received early Christmas gifts from Defence Forces Old Comrades Association (DEFOCA) Mukuru Studyville in South B, Nairobi County.
The heartwarming event was graced by Major Mathew Mwarangu and provided opportunity for DEFOCA leadership to have a candid conversation with the boys from underprivileged backgrounds, listen to their stories, encourage and instill a sense of optimism and determination in actualizing their dreams.
Major Mwarangu in his address emphasized the importance of the event in cultivating inclusivity, enable forums to motivate the most vulnerable in the society and extending kindness.
“We all have our backgrounds, dark experiences and misfortunes, and is our responsibility to use our experiences to mould us and uplift us to be better people in future.” he said.
He at the same time acknowledged and appreciated the caregivers and staff of the centre for their immense commitment and dedication to fostering the children and ensuring they experience love and genuine concerns.
The visit culminated with donation of food staffs from DEFOKA to the centre and counselling sessions from psychology experts from Defence Forces Wellness Centre and Defence Forces Memorial Hospital on how to overcome some of societal challenges.
The Rehabilitation Centre was established in 1987 and primarily focuses on recruiting unfortunate boys aged between 8 – 17 years from the streets of Nairobi, reformed them through education, and eventually integrated back to the community.
