Defence Cabinet Secretary Hon. Soipan Tuya made her first visit to the Defence Forces Memorial Hospital (DFMH) to familiarize herself with its services and operations. She was accompanied by Chief of the Defence Forces, General Charles Kahariri; Principal Secretary for Defence, Dr. Patrick Mariru; Commander Kenya Army, Lieutenant General David Tarus; and Director of Medical Services, Major General (Dr.) Nganga. She was welcomed by DFMH Commandant, Brigadier John Khahoya.
During the visit, Hon. Tuya received a briefing on the hospital’s history and services, followed by a tour of key facilities including the Defence Forces College of Health Sciences (a College of National Defence University-Kenya), the Radiology Complex, Male Surgical Ward, and the Malaika Paediatric/Newborn Unit. The Paediatric Unit specializes in early and accurate diagnosis of complex paediatric surgical cases, contributing to successful outcomes for conditions like liver transplants, congenital heart diseases, and bone marrow transplants.
In her remarks, Hon. Tuya emphasized the importance of healthcare and well-being for military personnel, acknowledging their sacrifices in safeguarding the nation’s freedom. She commended the hospital staff for their dedication and pledged to adopt innovations that ensure the highest standards of healthcare.
The CS also highlighted the Ulinzi Prime Healthcare Fund, which aims to open KDF hospitals to select public officers, providing access to quality healthcare at Level IV, V, and VI military facilities at affordable rates. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader goal of achieving universal healthcare.
On his part, General Kahariri expressed gratitude for the Ministry of Defence’s support in financial and manpower resources, which has greatly benefited the facility. He praised the medical personnel for their expertise and commitment to handling complex medical situations involving military personnel. Additionally, he reaffirmed the goal of making DFMH self-sufficient and capable of training external medical professionals.
DFMH provides healthcare to military personnel and their dependents while also training medical professionals through the Defence Forces College of Health Sciences, preparing them for wartime, peacetime, and emergency medical scenarios.
The visit by the Cabinet Secretary underscores the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to the health and well-being of military personnel and their families. With ongoing investments in modern facilities, skilled professionals, and comprehensive training programs, DFMH is set to remain a cornerstone in providing top-tier medical services and support to the Forces.
