Defence CS Hon. Soipan Tuya today appeared before the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture chaired by Webuye West MP Dan Wanyama to discuss the progress of the stadia the Ministry of Defence (MOD) is developing ahead of this year’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) and 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
MOD through Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is supporting the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports in upgrading Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre (MISC) Kasarani as the main venues for 2025 CHAN, and Police Sacco Stadium and Ulinzi Sports Complex as auxiliary training facilities.
For the 2027 AFCON that Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania, KDF is overseeing the construction of the brand new 60,000-seater capacity Talanta Sports City Stadium that will host the continental event alongside MISC Kasarani as the main venues.
In line with Confederation of African Football (CAF) requirements, KDF is undertaking the upgrading of Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Uasin Gishu County as an alternative venue for AFCON as well as three training pitches within MISC Kasarani complex.
The Cabinet Secretary was accompanied by Defence PS Dr Patrick Mariru, Vice Chief of the Defence Forces (VCDF) Lt Gen John Omenda, Chief of Infrastructure at DHQ Brig Titus Sokobe and the Ministry’s Director of Administration Benjamin Odegi were present.
