CS DEFENCE ATTENDS FUNCTION ABOARD USS HERSHEL ‘WOODY’ WILLIAMS

On Wednesday, 25th September 2024, the Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Hon. Soipan Tuya, attended a ‘Request the Pleasure of your Company’ (RPC) event on board the United States Navy ship USS Hershel ‘Woody’ Williams (USS HWW), which is docked at Mombasa Port for a four-day visit.

CS Tuya was accompanied by the US Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Meg Whitman, and Commander of the Kenya Air Force, Maj. Gen. Fatuma Ahmed. They were hosted by the ship’s Commanding Officer, Captain Amy Lindahl.

During the event, CS Tuya highlighted the ongoing maritime security cooperation between the U.S. and Kenya, noting its role in strengthening Kenya’s regional security through joint training, provision of military equipment, and counterterrorism collaboration. She emphasized that these efforts reflect the strong partnership between Kenya and the U.S.

The CS also underscored the importance of the ship’s arrival in enhancing Kenya’s maritime security, particularly in combating illicit activities in the Indian Ocean.

US Ambassador Whitman reiterated the significance of joint Kenya-U.S. security operations in the Indian Ocean, which aim to secure Kenyan waters and maintain open sea lanes and freedom of navigation.

Also present at the event were Mombasa County Governor Hon. Abdullswamad Sherrif Nassir, General Officers, Deputy Commander of the Kenya Navy Brig. Sankale Kiswaa, and Senior Officers.
