Commander Kenya Navy Fleet, Brigadier Mohamed Shemote, officially flagged off the Kenya Navy Special Boat Unit (SBU) operators for The Africa-India Key Maritime Engagement (AIKEYME) Exercise, on 10 April 2025 at the Kenya Navy Mtongwe Jetty.

The multi-nation exercise will be conducted in Tanzania in the coming weeks. It aims at enhancing interoperability, fostering cooperation, and strengthening maritime security among navies. The exercise is part of the culmination phase of EX JITEGEMEE XXVI, which contributes to maritime security within the Indian Ocean region and strengthens regional partnerships.

In his speech, Brigadier Shemote congratulated the participants on their selection for the exercise, acknowledging the honor and responsibility that comes with such an opportunity. He reminded them that their conduct during the mission would not only reflect on them as individuals but also on the Kenya Navy at large.

“You carry our flag, our values, and our reputation with you. I know you will uphold them with professionalism, discipline, and the confidence that defines the team. You stand today on the threshold of a mission that extends far beyond routine operations. You are not merely participants; you are ambassadors of our Navy’s capability, discipline, and unwavering commitment to international security. In this dynamic and often unpredictable maritime environment, your professionalism will be a beacon of reliability and excellence,” said Brigadier Shemote.

In his remarks, Commanding Officer Special Operations Squadron (SOS), Lieutenant Colonel Kipkorir Keter, expressed strong confidence in the training and preparedness of the participants.

He affirmed his trust in their skills and professionalism, stating that their performance would not only reflect their individual capabilities but also highlight the Kenya Navy’s commitment and capacity in ensuring maritime security.

“The team has been selected, trained and equipped to participate in the forthcoming EX-AIKEYME and we are confident in their abilities to meet the expectations of the exercise. As an elite force, I take this opportunity to remind you to uphold the highest level of professionalism, discipline, teamwork, and initiative. I have no doubt you will exemplify the SBU ethos.

Also, endeavor to gain and share best tactics, practices, and experiences, especially in asymmetrical warfare and, of course, building friendships,” urged Lieutenant Colonel Keter.

Present during the ceremony were Deputy Commander Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe, Colonel Wilberforce Murimi, senior officers, officers and sailors.
