COMMANDER KENYA ARMY LIGHTS UP DHQ SQUASH FINALE

The 2025 Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Squash Tournament came to a thrilling close on April 25, 2025 at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) Squash Court, with Maj Tonny Mwenda of DHQ emerging the overall champion in the Main Cup category.

The annual event which began on April 22nd brought together 30 participants drawn from the three KDF Services and Ministry of Defence civilian staff.

Conducted in a single-elimination format, the tournament saw participants compete in three categories: the Main Cup, Shield Cup and Plate Cup. Colonel George Ole Katumpe finished as the Main Cup runner-up, while Major Denis Kairemia from Headquarter Kenya Army and the Combat Engineer Brigade Commander Brigadier Victor Mburu battled in the Shield Cup finals, with Major Kairemia taking the win. The Plate Cup was won by Mr. Daniel Ouma, a civilian staff member from Moi Airbase, who defeated the director of the tournament, Colonel Samson Kasura, the Commander Kenya Army Corps of Signals, in a gripping match.

The Commander Kenya Army, Lieutenant General David Tarus, an avid squash player, officiated the finals and presided over the closing ceremony. In his remarks, he commended the players for their resilience, energy and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

He emphasized the value of the sporting event as one that significantly boosts cardiovascular health, mental resilience and overall operational readiness.

Special recognition was given to Colonel Simon Buuri of Moi Air Base for organizing the tournament, and to Warrant Officer Class II Elias Oluoch of Moi Airbase for his outstanding participation.

The Commander Combat Engineer Brigade expressed gratitude to the Army Commander for supporting the event and proposed making it a quarterly activity to keep personnel consistently fit and engaged.

Lt Gen Tarus encouraged more officers and service members to embrace the sport, noting the impressive response and enthusiasm displayed throughout the tournament.
