The Commander of the Kenya Air Force, Major General Fatuma Ahmed, on 13th January 2025 met with Warrant Officer 2 (WO2) Hellen Obiri, the 2024 Boston Marathon Champion, at the Kenya Air Force Headquarters in Nairobi.
Maj Gen Ahmed warmly welcomed WO2 Obiri to the headquarters and extended heartfelt congratulations on her exceptional achievements, notably her consecutive victories at the Boston Marathon in 2023 and 2024. She lauded Obiri as a remarkable athlete and an inspiring role model for the Kenya Air Force (KAF), the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), and the nation as a whole.
In response, WO2 Obiri expressed her profound gratitude for the Commander’s recognition and support. She highlighted the pivotal role of the KDF in fostering a supportive environment that has been instrumental to her sustained success in athletics.
During the meeting, Maj Gen Ahmed commended the improved discipline and commitment evident across all sports disciplines within the KDF. She emphasized the importance of recruiting and nurturing more athletes to uphold the KDF’s strong sporting tradition.
WO2 Obiri also shared her inspiring journey from excelling in middle-distance track events to transitioning into long-distance running. She attributed this shift to her evolving athletic goals, driven by her age and the desire to challenge her endurance as a marathon runner.
