COASTAL REGION MILITARY VETERANS OUTREACH

COASTAL REGION MILITARY VETERANS OUTREACH

On 3rd December 2024, Major General (Rtd) Lucas Tumbo, Chairperson of the Military Veterans Advisory Committee, and Brigadier Moses Leriari, Director General of the Directorate of Military Veterans (DMV), held a meeting with military veterans from Kenya’s Coastal Region. This event was part of an ongoing outreach initiative aimed at bringing together honorably retired military personnel from various regions.

The meeting sought to reaffirm the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to supporting veterans in various aspects of their lives, in accordance with the Military Veterans Act 2022 (Chapter 199A). This legislation provides a structured framework for managing veterans’ affairs, ensuring they have access to essential benefits, including the Dependents’ Education Fund.

In his address, Major General (Rtd) Tumbo acknowledged the sacrifices made by veterans during their active service, emphasizing their crucial role in the strength and success of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).
“Our veterans represent the very best of the nation,” said Maj Gen (Rtd) Tumbo. “You have stood on the frontlines, defending our sovereignty, promoting peace, and upholding the values we cherish. Your dedication, courage, and resilience are the foundation of Kenya’s national security. Today, we pay tribute to your sacrifices and acknowledge the challenges many of you face after leaving active service. The transition to civilian life can be difficult, and it is our collective duty to ensure you are supported in every possible way.”

Brigadier Leriari highlighted the guiding principles of the DMV, which are focused on honoring veterans, supporting their transition to civilian life, and facilitating access to vital benefits. He emphasized the DMV’s ongoing efforts to advocate for improved social security, better medical services, and psychological support.
“We are gathered not just to reflect on the past, but to look to the future and the ongoing role that each of you plays in shaping Kenya’s legacy,” Brigadier Leriari stated. “You are the men and women who safeguarded our freedom, stood tall in times of adversity, and through your service, laid the foundation upon which this nation stands. We understand the sacrifices you have made and the trials you continue to face. Our nation owes you a debt of immeasurable gratitude, and it is imperative that we not only recognize your efforts but ensure that your contributions are never forgotten.”

Lieutenant Colonel Franco Otiso, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Defence Savings and Credit Co-operative Society (DESACCO), also addressed the veterans, speaking on the importance of financial independence in retirement. He advised them to be mindful of their financial well-being by managing daily expenses, investing in profitable ventures, and avoiding significant lifestyle changes after retirement.
“Take care of your daily needs because financial independence helps reduce your expenses and allows for asset accumulation,” Lt Col Otiso advised. “Invest in businesses that offer good returns, and remember not to change your lifestyle after retirement—adjust your way of living instead.”

The program was attended by veteran officers and service members from Mombasa, Lamu, Kwale, Kilifi, and Taita Taveta counties.
