Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Francis Ogolla officially launched a five-year training program under the auspices of ‘College of Surgeons for East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA)’ at the Defence Forces Memorial Hospital in Nairobi.
COSECSA, which offers professional training capabilities to surgeons, is a hospital-based postgraduate collegiate training for surgeons that adopts low-cost but highly effective apprenticeship training.
During the launch, the CDF familiarized himself with the day-to-day operations of the Hospital together with Defence College of Health Sciences (DCHS) and assured the COSECSA leadership of his unwavering support to make the program a success.
DCHS Principal, Colonel Hellen Kamotho, made a comprehensive presentation to elaborate on the functions of the College, its capabilities, mandate, and the milestones since its inception.
DFMH was accredited as a training centre in 2022. Subsequently, two intakes for 2023 and 2024 each with 4 surgical trainees drawn from all the three Services of the Kenya Defence Forces were enrolled and are proceeding with training.
The DFMH COSECSA program has a unique focus highly relevant to the military by covering areas such as military medicine including biological weapons, sports medicine, tactical combat casualty care and mass combat casualty care training, war surgery to assure surgical competence on the battlefield in remote as well as advanced setups.
COSECSA has a presence in over 20 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and has been running for over 25 years.
Present during the events were, Director of Medical Services (DMS) Major General (Dr) George Ng’ang’a, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) of Research, Innovation and Strategic Studies at the National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) Major General William Shume, DVC Academics (NDU-K) Prof Anne Muigai COSECSA Country Representative Dr Mathenge Nduhiu and other senior officers.
