The Kenya Defence Savings and Credit Co-operative Society (DESACCO) successfully concluded a month-long financial literacy campaign, aimed at empowering soldiers taking part in Operation Amani Boni (OAB) as well as troops stationed at the Kenya Navy Base, Manda Bay in Lamu County.
While speaking during the launch of the sensitization program, 2nd Brigade Commander Brigadier William Kamoiro, reaffirmed the Kenya Defence Forces’ commitment to fostering both security and stability in the region. He emphasized the importance of financial literacy as a key pillar in empowering troops, enabling them to make informed financial decisions that contribute to their personal and professional well-being.
The commander further acknowledged the challenges faced by deployed soldiers and applauded DESACCO’s initiative, highlighting how such programs strengthen soldiers’ economic resilience and overall morale. He urged all personnel to actively engage in the sessions, take advantage of available financial opportunities, and leverage the knowledge gained to secure a better financial future for themselves and their families.
Speaking during the exercise, Captain Dida Odhiambo stressed the pivotal role of financial literacy in enhancing soldiers’ well-being while conducting their missions. “A soldier who is well taken care of financially is a soldier who is focused on his mission; hence, we need to instill this financial literacy to ensure the soldiers take care of their financial needs and utilise their finances in activities that can uplift their socio-economic status”, said Capt. Odhiambo.
During the exercise at the Baragoni Military Camp, Second Lieutenant Cheruiyot beseeched the soldiers to leverage on Desacco’s secure digital platforms, such as the online portal and mobile application, to track their finances and receive instant updates on transactions and seamlessly access other financial services, no matter their location.
At the heart of the campaign was a focus on affordable loan facilities, including personal, emergency, and development loans, all designed to provide troops with financial flexibility and support. Beyond financing, the program emphasized the Benevolent Fund, a crucial safety net that ensures financial aid for members and their families during unforeseen circumstances. Soldiers expressed appreciation for the opportunity to deepen their financial knowledge, strengthen trust in the SACCO’s offerings, and learn how to leverage available resources for greater financial stability.
The Dessaco personnel engaged with the troops at Minjila, Witu and Mkunumbi Forward Operating Bases, troops providing security for the LAPSSET project, Baragoni military camp, Lamu Port, Operation Amani Boni Headquarters, as well as the Kenya Naval Base, Manda Bay.
