AIRBORNE DAY COMMEMORATIONS

Kenya Defence Forces troops from the Army Special Operations Brigade marked the Airborne Day celebrations at Kenyatta Barracks in Gilgil, Nakuru County. The celebration was dubbed “honouring the injured Paratroopers still going strong”.

The Airborne Day, formerly Para Day, is celebrated annually on 5th August to commemorate the fallen heroes since the existence of Kenyan Airborne fraternity.

The event was graced by Commander ASOB, Brigadier Ahmed Saman. It was marked by colourful parades and thereafter laying of wreaths at the Brigade’s monument in honour of soldiers who paid the ultimate price in defence of the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. The 20 Parachute Battalion also showcased the Unit’s Regimental Colour and the ASOB’s rich history.

In his address, Brigadier Saman lauded the soldiers for their collective spirit in the execution of the Brigade’s mandate in different areas of deployment and at large the mandate of the Kenya Defence Forces of defending the territorial sovereignty and integrity.

A contingent of the Kenya Quick Reaction Force deployed under United Nations Mission in Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Ambrose Mwabili also honored this day in Mavivi Base in Beni

Airborne Day commemorates the role and sacrifices by fallen paratroopers, this year especially remembering those who died in Parachute Jumps in North Horr on 5th Aug 1971 and in other subsequent military operations they have engaged in to date.
