The Deputy Commander Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe (KNB MTG), Colonel Wilberforce Murimi, on 8 April 2025, officiated the establishment of a fruit orchard at the Kenya Navy Hospital in collaboration with ABSA Bank Kenya and the Greens of Africa Foundation (Kenya).
The initiative aimed to at establishing a fruit tree orchard to benefit members of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and their families, particularly in the Kenya Navy.
This effort aligns with the KDF’s commitment to the national tree growing strategy of planting 15 billion trees by 2032 in an effort to curb the adverse effects of climate change.
The initiative is part of the Environmental Soldier Programme, through which ABSA Bank Kenya donated 500 assorted fruit tree seedlings to support environmental sustainability within the military community.
In his address, Colonel Murimi emphasized the importance of individual responsibility in environmental conservation.
He encouraged participants to adopt a culture of tree planting and expressed his gratitude to ABSA Bank Kenya and the Greens of Africa Foundation for their continued support to the Kenya Navy in promotion of environmental security through reforestation efforts.
Speaking at the event, Senior Manager of ABSA Bank Kenya (Mombasa Branch), Mr. John Barissa, lauded the Kenya Navy for their steadfast support and proactive role in tree-planting initiatives aimed at combating the adverse effects of climate change.
The exercise was successfully conducted, during which seedlings of different fruit varieties were planted.
In attendance were the Commanding Officer KNB MTG , Lieutenant Colonel Desderius Ndwiga, officers, service members, family members, ABSA Bank Kenya representatives and Greens of Africa Foundation members.
