WAJIR AIR BASE HONOURED WITH THE PRESIDENTIAL AND REGIMENTAL COLOUR

His Excellency Dr. William Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), conferred Presidential and Regimental Colours to Wajir Air Base (WAB) during the Jamhuri Day celebrations on December 12, 2024, at Uhuru Gardens National Monument and Museum (UGNM&M) in Nairobi County.

Before the presentation, the President inspected a guard of honour mounted by the three KDF Services, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Pius Leshan. The consecration, presentation, and trooping of colours is a significant military ceremony that symbolizes the spirit of a regiment and commemorates gallant deeds performed by its troops.

Wajir Air Base’s history dates back to February 25, 1974, with the establishment of the Air Defence Control Unit (ADCU), which was tasked with defending the national airspace. In December 1974, the unit completed its first readiness test for combating air threats. Over time, through reorganization and modernization, the unit evolved into an Air Defence Regiment (ADR) on August 29, 2017, before being further elevated to a fully-fledged base with sub-unit headquarters across the country.

Military clergy led the consecration of the two colours, after which the President presented them in the presence of Chief of Defence Forces General Charles Kahariri, Kenya Army Commander Lieutenant General David Tarus, Kenya Air Force Commander Major General Fatma Ahmed, and Kenya Navy Commander Major General Paul Otieno.

In his address, the President reflected on the value of sovereignty and the enduring legacy of the sacrifices made by Kenya’s heroes, acknowledging their efforts in securing the country’s liberty, unity, peace, enterprise, and democracy. He emphasized the importance of the youth in national development, particularly their role in climate action, urban improvement, and landscape restoration. He also highlighted the government’s efforts to create opportunities for youth to strengthen their foundations in urban living and tackle climate change for future generations.

During the ceremony, KDF aircraft performed a spectacular fly-past, showcasing the range of aircraft used by the Air Force and Army to secure Kenya’s skies and protect its people at home and abroad.

The event was attended by various dignitaries, including President Adama Barrow of the Republic of Gambia, Vice President Dr. Kithure Kindiki, Prime Cabinet Secretary Hon. Musalia Mudavadi, Chief Justice Martha Koome, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, leaders of the majority in both houses, Member of Parliament Huldah Momanyi, and senior military officers.
