As part of its ongoing welfare initiatives, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) held a one-day mental health outreach workshop in the Gilgil region, specifically targeting spouses of service members who are currently deployed or preparing for deployment.
The workshop, themed “Stabilize the Home Front,” brought together mental health professionals, counselors, and military chaplains in a collaborative effort to support the emotional well-being of military families.
The event focused on providing psychological support, equipping spouses with practical coping strategies, and strengthening their resilience during the challenging periods of deployment and reintegration. Participants engaged in sessions on emotional wellness, relationship building, stress management, communication skills, and other effective coping mechanisms aimed at fostering a stable and supportive home environment.
Speaking at the event, Gilgil Garrison Commander Brigadier Joel Cherutich emphasized the vital role of military spouses.
“You are the pillars of our families, and I want to thank all of you for the sacrifices you make to support our soldiers, both mentally and physically. We are committed to supporting you the same way you support our service members,” he said.
Participants expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that it validated their experiences and provided them with valuable tools to navigate the emotional ups and downs of military life.
Military chaplains urged those attending to prioritize self-care, maintain strong spiritual foundations, and seek support from their communities. Counselors underscored the importance of mental health awareness and early intervention.
As deployments remain a constant reality in military life, programs like the Gilgil outreach workshop play a crucial role in ensuring that no military family feels alone in the journey.
