MUSA ADAN ABDI
KENYA NAVY SERGEANT MAJOR
WO1 Musa Adan Abdi, born on 10 April 1968 in Buna Sub County, Wajir County, enlisted in the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) on 27 April 1988. He completed Basic Military Training at the Recruits Training School in Eldoret, then specialized in Seamanship and gun operation at the Naval Training School, now known as the Kenya Naval Training College (KNTC).
Throughout his military career, WO1 Musa has served in various capacities within the KDF. In 1991, he was assigned to Kenya Navy Ship (KNS) NYAYO, where he participated in EX REFUGEE INFLUX. He continued as a seaman and gun operator with the 76 Squadron onboard KNS MAMBA and KNS HARAMBEE until 1998 and subsequently worked at the Maritime Surveillance Radar Station (MASURA), now known as the Maritime Surveillance Squadron (MARSS), Diani Station.
From 2004 to 2008, WO1 Musa returned to the Kenya Navy Fleet, serving on KNS TANA and KNS SHUJAA. He then took on the role of Company Sergeant Major at the Recruits Training School (RTS) until 2011. After leaving RTS in 2012, he was involved in various operations, including OPERATION MAMBA and the historic capture of the Port of Kismayu in OPERATION SLEDGE HAMMER as the Team Sergeant Major.
Between 2014 and 2017, he served as a Coxswain onboard KNS NYAYO and KNS JASIRI, followed by a tenure as Company Sergeant Major at the Kenya Military Academy (KMA) for one year. In 2018, he was promoted to Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) and became Coxswain on KNS JASIRI until 2020, later serving as Master-At-Arms at the Kenya Navy Base Manda until August 2024.
WO1 Musa has participated in the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM II and AMISOM X) in support of OPERATION LINDA NCHI and has received numerous medals for his exemplary service, including the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal and the Linda Nchi Medal.
He was appointed as the Kenya Navy Sergeant Major on 04 September 2024.
He is married with seven children.
