On Sunday, 1st December 2024, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) commemorated World AIDS Day at Laikipia Air Base (LAB). The event was officiated by Major General Fatuma Ahmed, the Commander of the Kenya Air Force (KAF), who represented the Chief of the Defence Forces, General Charles Kahariri, as the Chief Guest. Her attendance underscored the KDF’s dedication to promoting health, prevention, and solidarity among its personnel and the surrounding community.
With the theme “Take the Right Path: My Health my Right,” the event aimed to raise awareness and combat the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. Key activities included free HIV testing and counselling, distribution of educational materials, and the provision of voluntary medical services, emphasizing prevention and the importance of regular testing.
In her address, Maj Gen Ahmed highlighted the significance of a united approach in combating HIV/AIDS, emphasizing the importance of awareness, prevention, support systems, and the eradication of discrimination against individuals living with HIV.
“The fight against HIV/AIDS is not just a health issue; it is a shared responsibility that demands leadership, commitment, and unity. Together, we can achieve a future free from stigma, infections, and AIDS-related deaths,” she stated.
The program also featured educational sessions by KDF health professionals, focusing on treatment adherence and addressing HIV/AIDS-related stigma. A symbolic march around the base highlighted unity and the shared responsibility in tackling the epidemic.
This year’s observance showcased the KDF’s leadership in national health initiatives and reinforced its commitment to fostering a healthier, more inclusive society. It reaffirmed the KDF’s dedication to supporting the well-being of its personnel and the wider community, reflecting a proactive stance in addressing health challenges.
