Vice Chief of the Defence Forces (VCDF), Lieutenant General John Omenda, today hosted Brigadier General Walid Adel Elshorbagy, head of the Arab Republic of Egypt’s military delegation, at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi. The delegation is in Kenya on a study tour.
Lieutenant General Omenda highlighted the long-standing cordial relations between Kenya and Egypt, dating back to the pre-independence era. Over the years, the two nations have collaborated extensively, particularly in the defence sector.
He noted that the two countries have a robust Joint Commission for Cooperation (JCC) aimed at promoting peace and security at regional and international levels.
Additionally, in May 2021, Kenya and Egypt signed a Technical Agreement on Defence Cooperation, facilitating collaboration in areas such as military medicine, technology transfer, joint manufacturing, military training, and exchange programs.
Egypt has also provided specialized training to Kenyan professionals in medicine, agriculture, engineering, and diplomacy through its universities. Both countries benefit from development cooperation through annual scholarships under the Nile Basin Scholarship and the Egyptian Agency for Partnership and Development.
Since 2011, military personnel from both nations have participated in courses at Kenya’s National Defence College (NDC) and Egypt’s Nasser High Military Academy. Furthermore, since 2013, service members from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the Egyptian Armed Forces (EAF) have engaged in exchange programs at the Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC) in Kenya and the Command and Staff College (CSC) in Egypt.
Looking ahead, Kenya seeks to enhance cooperation with Egypt in key defence areas, including the defence industry, peace support operations, research and development, border security management, maritime security, space and cyber security, counter-terrorism, and counter-violent extremism.
Lieutenant General Omenda was accompanied by Brigadier Patrick Koech, Chief of Training Development, Establishment, and Equipment Tables at the Defence Headquarters.
