Kenya is among 28 nations that took part in Exercise Eager Lion 2022 which was hosted by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan from 4th to 15th of September this year. The two-week multi-lateral military training exercise is designed to improve interoperability and provide advanced training proficiencies for border security to address regional challenges across land, air, sea and cyber domains.
Speaking at the opening ceremony in Amman Jordan, the Deputy Commander of Operations and Training, Brigadier General Abdallah Al Shdiefat, underscored the importance of the exercise in building trust amongst partner nations while sustaining mature relationships that highlight their mutual interest in countering terrorism and maintaining regional security. “This exercise bonds our country’s’ armed forces and most reliable partners leading the way for security and stability in the region,” he said.
In his remarks during the Exercise Eager Lion Senior Leaders Seminar at Amman, the Vice-Chancellor of the National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K), Lieutenant General Jonah M Mwangi, reiterated the significance of the exercise in enhancing the unity of purpose while addressing common security challenges.
“Indeed, invitation to the Multinational Exercise Eager Lion 2022 demonstrates the robust strategic partnership between Kenya and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, which affords each of us opportunities to grow our capabilities to effectively respond to current and emerging threats thus promoting international peace and security,” he added.
Eager Lion, one of the largest military exercises in the region enhances Kenya’s partnerships with the Jordanian Armed Forces in our collective ability to seamlessly conduct simultaneous and varied military operations.
In addition to exchanging military expertise, the exercise affords participants opportunities to improve interagency communications and coordination, using simulated regular and irregular warfare scenarios, to activate a Combined Joint Task Force. This year’s scenarios focused on cyber threats, integrated Air and Missile Defence and Maritime and Border security for disaster management and humanitarian aid.
Among other participants in the exercise were coalition military personnel from the US Central Command, Belgium, Norway, Spain, Pakistan, Ukraine, Germany, France, Iraq, Italy and Japan.
