The Defence Forces Medical Insurance Scheme (DEFMIS) held a two-day sensitization seminar for its staff beginning Tuesday, 28th June 2022 at the Humanitarian Peace Support School (HPSS), Nairobi.
Themed ‘It starts with us’, the seminar saw participants taken through various topics including customer service skills, effective communication, professional skills of administration, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), data protection and mental wellbeing.
Participants also got an insight into insurance fraud prevention and management, compensation on claims and welfare services as well as management of stress.
In an opening speech read on his behalf by the Commandant Kenya Military Academy Major General Fatuma Ahmed, the Chief Guest, Vice Chief of the Defence Forces (VCDF) Lieutenant General Francis Ogolla reiterated the noticeable strides DEFMIS has achieved over the years in ensuring retired KDF personnel get quality medical care.
“The main core value of KDF is professionalism and DEFMIS has been able to execute this aspect over the years. I thank the Managing Director Brigadier Juma Mwinyikai and his team for their constant dedication and progress in ensuring the scheme’s vision and mission are achieved,” said the VCDF
In her remarks, Major General Ahmed said that DEFMIS is a pioneer medical insurance scheme in Kenya for retirees, and over the years has been able to win the hearts and trust of its members. She encouraged the team to keep upholding the KDF core values, especially the aspect of integrity.
During the closing ceremony, the Guest of Honor, Commander Border Security Command Major General Stephen Otieno congratulated the scheme for its commendable performance despite the difficult economic uncertainties.
He noted that in the past year, the scheme has increased its investments from 8% to 10% through diversification of its assets as well as automation of processes through digital migration that shall ultimately reduce fraud and enhance customer experience.
Major General Otieno emphasized the importance of DEFMIS’ continued innovative approach to challenges.
“The success of DEFMIS is thus dependent on preparedness, cohesion, and esprit de corps,” he said.
The seminar aimed at developing personal and professional skills that will strengthen teamwork and enhance good working relationships.
DEFMIS is a post-retirement medical insurance scheme that provides medical cover to retired Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers, service members, and their dependents.
