The Kenya Defence Forces Engineers Brigade under a multiagency operation are finalizing two boreholes at Kirimon and Dam-Mawe in Laikipia County to alleviate water shortage, a cause for perennial conflict among pastoralist communities in the region.
The two boreholes that commenced drilling on 27th November 2021 will have water pumped to overhead tanks from where it will be dispensed for locals to access clean water. The installation of the pumps and tanks is underway.
Visiting the area on Wednesday, 1 December 2021, the General Officer Commanding Border Security Command (GOC BSC) Major General Stephen Otieno, congratulated the multiagency team for expediting the projects, saying they will go a long way in supporting the livelihood of locals. He was accompanied by the 2nd Brigade Commander Brigadier Peter Assava, Colonel Gabriel Kibuchi, Commanding Officer 5th Kenya Riffles Lieutenant Colonel Dennis Obiero among other officers from the multiagency team.
Major General Otieno also visited Mukutani and Kirimon Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) where construction is set to commence to upgrade their infrastructure as the government seeks to improve the day to day operations of the multiagency troops.
The multiagency operation in Laikipia commenced in September 2021 and is currently putting in place measures to alleviate recurrent water and pasture shortage that often lead to conflict among the pastoralist communities. Reconciliation among communities is also ongoing led by the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO)
