The Most Rev Dr Jackson Nasoore Ole Sapit, the Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya, on 12th August 2021 presided over the ground-breaking ceremony of the new Anglican Church and the deconsecrating of St. Michael’s DHQ Cathedral at Defence Headquarters in Nairobi in an event graced by the Vice Chief of Defence Forces (VCDF) Lieutenant General Francis Ogolla.
In his remarks, the VCDF Lt Gen Ogolla, lauded the church for the noble gesture of expansion in order to accommodate more worshippers and thanked the Archbishop for gracing the ceremony.
“It’s a great privilege and honour to have you here and we do not take this gesture for granted. It’s our hope that we will have more spiritual interaction in the future after the completion of the church facility,” added the VCDF.
Lt. Gen. Ogolla also noted that the, decision to relocate the cathedral was very strategic as it allowed both the KDF personnel and members of the public to easily access the facility.
The Archbishop, who reflected on the ‘promised land’ as the symbol of the relationship between the Lord and His people, said that the land where the new sanctuary will be built will be recognized as proof that God is truthful and faithful to his promise. He implored the congregants to be fully transformed and to shed the past and cast aside things of old that may distract them from progressing forward.
In his remarks, he urged KDF leadership and the clergy family to consider offering both spiritual and psychological guidance to soldiers so as to avert cases of death through shooting or suicide.
“Cases of death through suicide have been frequently reported. Its known that security officers, on daily basis, confront traumatizing incidents which may lead to psychological and emotional disturbance. Effective coping strategies such as workplace counselling can reduce such cases,” noted Rev Dr Ole Sapit.
Earlier on the Archbishop paid a courtesy call to the Chief of Defence Forces, General Robert Kibochi at his office.
Present during the event were senior officers, principal chaplains from defence units, officers and service personnel.
The construction of the church, is set to begin next month so as to replace the deconsecrated one and accommodate more worshippers.
