EAST AFRICA COMMUNITY (EAC) HOLDS ITS 32ND MEETING OF THE SECTORAL COUNCIL ON COOPERATION IN DEFENCE.

The 32nd meeting of the East African Community Sectoral Council on Cooperation in Defence is currently underway at Windsor restaurant, Kiambu County, Kenya.

The meeting, convened under pursuant of Article 10 of the EAC Protocol on Cooperation in Defence Affairs, is considering several matters geared towards deepening and widening the regional integration agenda in the Defence sector.

The agendas included,

  • review of the 12th EAC Armed Forces Field Training Exercise USHIRIKIANO IMARA 2019;
  • EAC Command and Staff Colleges/Higher Military Training Institutions/Military Academies;
  • Health Services of the EAC Partner States’ Armed Forces;
  • Military Industrial Facilities availed for shared Utilization and
  • EAC Counter Terrorism strategy.

The council chairperson, Brigadier Benard Korir of Kenya Defense Forces expressed his extolment on the apt arrangements that ensured that the meeting was convened in a secure environment under strict adherence to Covid- 19 protocols.

He emphasized on the importance of the inter- relationship between the processes within the defence sector and other elements of security and reiterated that EAC’S collective security will be best guaranteed by cooperation in defence and security.
“Defence is a key player in the integration process,” he said.

The East African Community (EAC) is a regional intergovernmental organisation of Six Partner States, comprising Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, South Sudan and Uganda, with its headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.

The ongoing session is being attended by the Partner States’ Defence Experts Working Group on Operations and Training for a five-day meeting.
