KAF HOSTS JOINT AIR OPERATORS SEMINAR

KAF HOSTS JOINT AIR OPERATORS SEMINAR

The Kenya Air Force (KAF) hosted a Joint Air Operators Seminar from 23rd to 25th April 2025 at Moi Air Base. The event brought together air operators from KAF units, as well as representatives from the Kenya Army Corps of Aviation, the Maritime Surveillance Squadron, and the Kenya Navy. The seminar was officially opened and closed by the Commander Kenya Air Force, Major General Fatuma Ahmed.

The seminar aimed to reinforce a culture of safety, enhance operational efficiency, and foster mutual understanding among aviation professionals across the tri-services. Held under the theme “Towards a Holistic Flight Safety Culture: Integrating People, Processes, and Technology,” the forum highlighted the importance of synergy in achieving mission success through integrated aviation practices.

The programme featured expert sessions led by both internal and external Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). Key facilitators included Colonel Vigisa, Deputy Base Commander Moi Air Base; Colonel Charles Munyao, Chief of Operations KAF; senior officers from KAF Headquarters overseeing Logistics and Personnel; and Moi Air Base Safety Officers. Additional insights came from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), the Ministry of Transport, and the Kenya School of Government (KSG), emphasizing the value of cross-sector collaboration.

Participants explored a wide range of topics, including crew resource management, handling of dangerous goods, aviation security, online flight planning, flexible use of airspace, accident investigation and lessons learned, professional ethics, command relations, Kaizen, stress management, aerospace medicine, procurement procedures, and the legal and human dimensions of flight safety.

In her remarks, Major General Ahmed emphasized the importance of continuous professional development and interagency collaboration as vital pillars of operational excellence.

“The seminar has come alive through your active participation, discussing important issues such as stress management. I trust that each of you is walking away with actionable ideas to apply in your respective areas. As we conclude, I urge you all to be ambassadors of safety—not just within the Kenya Air Force, but across all joint and interagency operations. We are the ones to make a difference in enhancing mission readiness and promoting a culture of safety.”

Echoing these sentiments, Embakasi Air Base Commander Brigadier Stephen Kapkory commended the participants and emphasized the disciplined, proactive application of lessons learned.

“Let’s implement the insights gained here. Uphold discipline, understand your roles and responsibilities, and strive to operate safely and efficiently,” he said.

The seminar concluded with a strategic “market of ideas,” where participants presented innovative proposals aimed at driving continuous improvement, optimizing aviation resources, and strengthening policy and training frameworks.

These recommendations are expected to inform future strategic planning, reaffirming the Kenya Air Force’s role as a catalyst for excellence in joint air operations.
