KENYAN TROOPS IN DRC SHARE EASTER LOVE WITH FOOTBALLERS IN BENI

In the spirit of Easter celebrations, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops serving under the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) hosted Umoja Football team from Beni town for a football match at the Kenya Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF) Grounds in Mavivi, North Kivu Province.

The match ended in a 4-0 result in favour of the Kenyan troops. Thereafter, the local youth were hosted to a common luncheon organized by the troops within Camp Lieutenant Masulia, few paces from the football pitch.

Speaking as he handed over foot balls to the visiting team, the Contingent Commander of KENQRF Lieutenant Colonel Simon Seda underscored the spirit of love during Easter as the main idea behind the match. “The pursuit of peace and security is a joint venture and as such, a close bond between security apparatus and the local population -especially the youth- is pivotal in denying negative forces freedom of action and avenues of disturbing the local population,” he said, pointing out that the troops would give more assistance to the team during a rematch slated for the weeks ahead.

His sentiments were echoed by the Chief of Matembo Location in the Commune of Mulekera, Mr. Jacques Manoku who accompanied the footballers reiterated the need for enhancement of partnership between MONUSCO troops and the local population. “We are happy to be invited for such occasions as it not only helps engage our youths but also enables us synchronise our efforts towards the path of peace and stability,” he said.
