Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops serving under the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), in collaboration with the Brazilian Jungle Warfare Mobile Training Team (JWMTT), are taking part in jungle warfare tactics and techniques training together with the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC).
Aligned with MONUSCO’s mandate to support the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Security Sector Reform, the training covers a comprehensive range of jungle warfare skills, including navigation, survival techniques, patrolling, and offensive operations. This initiative aims to enhance FARDC’s operational effectiveness in conducting military operations in jungle terrain.
Since 2019, the JWMTT has been instrumental in training troops within the Force Intervention Brigade (FIB) under MONUSCO, as well as the FARDC. Kenyan troops have also benefited from their expertise in the past, further strengthening their combat readiness.
Speaking during the training exercise, Kenya Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF) Contingent Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Simon Seda, highlighted the significance of the program in boosting FARDC’s combat preparedness.
“We are privileged to collaborate with our brothers from FARDC. This training not only enhances their capability to operate effectively in jungle environments but also ensures seamless coordination with KENQRF and other contingents in executing MONUSCO’s mandate of protecting civilians and neutralizing threats posed by illegal armed groups,”
The JWMTT team leader, Lieutenant Colonel Celso Augusto Sampaio, lauded the initiative, acknowledging that sustained training in jungle warfare keeps troops ready at all times.
“Working with KENQRF in our exchange of knowledge and skills with our brothers from FARDC gives us a head start, as they are not only professional but also highly skilled and committed to their duties,” he said.
