The Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri, delivered a keynote address at the inaugural public lecture hosted by the National Intelligence Research University (NIRU) on 27 March 2025.
The event, organized under the theme “Kenya’s Evolving National Security Landscape,” brought together leaders from various sectors to discuss Kenya’s security challenges, strategic positioning, and the evolving role of intelligence in an increasingly complex world.
In his address, General Kahariri emphasized the critical role of strategic intelligence in tackling Kenya’s security threats. He highlighted the shifting global geopolitical landscape, characterized by great power rivalries and conflicts, stressing that Kenya must proactively navigate these regional and international challenges to safeguard its national interests and economic stability.
He also addressed internal security concerns, noting that Kenya’s expanding democratic space and heightened public awareness require strategic leadership to maintain stability. He urged policymakers, intelligence analysts, and security professionals to provide forward-looking insights to help the nation navigate an unpredictable global environment while protecting and advancing its national interests.
The event’s main speaker, Director General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) Noordin M. Haji, was joined by other distinguished speakers, including Attorney General Dorcas Oduor, former Cabinet Secretary Amb. (Dr.) Amina Mohamed, and Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo. A panel of experts in security, human rights, and international relations also contributed to the discussions.
Participants represented a broad spectrum of society, including civil society organizations, academia, the private sector, youth groups, university student bodies, religious institutions, government agencies, and the transport sector (matatu and boda boda associations). Their diverse perspectives underscored the shared responsibility of ensuring national security.
