Commander Kenya Navy, Major General Paul Otieno, on 20 March 2025, flagged off Kenya Navy Ship (KNS) JASIRI and KNS SHUPAVU on EX JITEGEMEE XXVI at the Kenya Navy Fleet, Mkunguni Jetty.
EX JITEGEMEE XXVI is an annual sea training cruise for Junior Officers Under Training (JOUTs) aimed at training Kenya Navy young officers and sailors, equipping them with the necessary sea practical skills for their future working environment.
The training builds on the theoretical knowledge the officers obtained at the Kenya Naval Training College (KNTC), offering a hands-on foundation that ensures they become skilled and effective divisional ship’s officers capable of carrying out maritime operations successfully.
In his address, Major General Paul Otieno underscored the importance of the training cruise in enhancing the Kenya Navy’s maritime capabilities and readiness. He highlighted the ever-changing nature of the maritime environment, stressing the need for continuous, adaptive training to ensure sailors remain resilient and well-prepared for evolving challenges at sea.
“The current environment keeps on evolving by being volatile, uncertain and complex. This calls for continuous tailor-made training embedded with lessons learned to enhance the adaptability of our sailors,” said Major General Otieno.
Major General Otieno also emphasized the importance of discipline during the training cruise. He urged the officers to uphold the highest standards of conduct, as their behavior during the training would reflect not only on their personal growth but also on the reputation of the entire Kenya Navy.
Commander Kenya Navy Fleet, Brigadier Mohamed Shemote, encouraged the trainees on their work, assuring them that their dedication does not go unnoticed and that they have the unwavering support of the Kenya Navy across the vast ocean.
“While you undertake the training be assured that a steady stream of support will follow you across the vast ocean. I am sure your commitment does not go unnoticed, and we are proud to stand by you and cheer you on every step of the way. Each of you is not just a sailor; you are a vital part of a great tapestry, woven with valor, commitment, and the unbreakable spirit of those who serve,” said Brigadier Shemote.
Present during the ceremony were Deputy Commander Kenya Navy, Brigadier John Kiswaa, Chief of Naval Medical Services, Brigadier (Dr) Justino Muinde, Commandant Kenya Naval Training College, Colonel Benson Karuimbo, Senior Officers, Officers, and Service Members.
