The Defence Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (DESACCO) commenced its 6th Annual Delegates Meeting (ADM) on 12 March 2025 at the Humanitarian Peace Support School in Embakasi, Nairobi. The two-day event began with a Delegates Training Day aimed at enhancing financial literacy and addressing key concerns affecting SACCO members.
Brigadier (Brig) Edward Nyamao, Chief of Compensation and Welfare and Vice Chairman of the DESACCO Board, officially opened the meeting. The ADM brought together delegates from various regions and units for training sessions designed to deepen their understanding of DESACCO’s operations, their roles, and their capacity to promote financial literacy among members.
In his opening remarks, Brig Nyamao emphasized that the training’s ultimate goal was to empower members to achieve financial independence while upholding DESACCO’s core mission—improving the socio-economic well-being of both serving and retired Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel and their families through affordable, reliable, and accessible financial services.
This year’s ADM is guided by the theme “Committed to Financial Independence.” Brig Nyamao stressed the importance of integrating financial education into service delivery to enable informed decision-making among members. He also highlighted the need to expand financial knowledge, understand SACCO regulations and policies, and maintain a professional work environment.
During the training, DESACCO Front Office Service Activity (FOSA) Manager Captain Edwin Murori encouraged members to take advantage of the SACCO’s banking services, noting their affordability and accessibility. He also elaborated on the Lipa Pole Pole initiative, developed in collaboration with Defence Forces Welfare Services (DEFWES), which provides flexible payment options. This initiative enables members to pay for essential services and products in manageable installments, reducing financial strain.
Beyond financial management, delegates also received training on cybersecurity and data protection, marketing and advocacy, and their critical role as SACCO ambassadors.
The training was attended by DESACCO Chief Executive Officer Brig Nehemiah Kemei, Director Brigadier Sammy Kipng’etich, and members of the Board of Directors.
