The Commandant Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC) Maj Gen Eric Kinuthia on 7th March 2025 commissioned the Oldonyo Enger (Olepolos) borehole in Kajiado County. The borehole was constructed by KDF in conjunction with JCSC in appreciation to the local community for their unwavering support extended to KDF during training activities in the area.
In his address to the community, Maj Gen Kinuthia pointed out that commissioning of boreholes by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is part of their broader mandate to support national development and community welfare, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions of Kenya. KDF often engages in such projects as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, especially in areas where water scarcity is a significant challenge, added the Commandant. Maj Gen Kinuthia acknowledged the good collaboration between the locals and KDF and urged them to strive to maintain the borehole in order to ensure long-term functionality.
The local leadership headed by the area Chief, Mr. David Kurma, village elder Mr. James Ole Nchoki and a resident, Mr. Kirisiet Naathendaa Ole Tundaa acknowledged the efforts by KDF in drilling of the borehole which they reiterated will help end perennial water scarcity in the area. They pointed out that the water tap and animal water points will assist them greatly.
The KDF, in collaboration with local leaders and government agencies, identifies areas in need of water and with the aid of KDF’s engineering units or contracted experts drill boreholes and install water pumps. Once the borehole is complete, it is officially handed over to the community during a commissioning ceremony attended by KDF officials, local leaders, and residents.
The aim is to provide access to clean and reliable water for local communities, schools, and institutions in water-scarce regions as well as support the government’s efforts in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation).
The drilling of boreholes by the KDF is a critical intervention that aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the Big Four Agenda, particularly in improving the quality of life for citizens in underserved regions.
Also present were Chief Instructor JCSC Brigadier David Chesire, and Senior Officers, Officers, Service Members from Defence Headquarters, JCSC as well as local residents.
