KDF CONDUCTS JOINT AND COMBINED ARMS FIRE-POWER EXERCISE

The Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Defence, Hon. Soipan Tuya, joined the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in a Joint and Combined Fire-Power Exercise at Larisoro, Samburu County. This exercise marked the culmination of the pre-deployment training for the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and the Kenya Military Academy Officer Cadet Grand Finale Exercise.

The exercise aimed to showcase the KDF’s capabilities in joint and combined warfare while also providing AUSSOM pre-deployment troops and officer cadets with a realistic warfare experience. During the event, the CS was shown a static display of various KDF arms and ammunition, where she was briefed on their capabilities. She also received an orientation on the Kenya Army’s different formations, including Infantry, Armour, Artillery, and Aviation. Later, she participated in a live firing exercise simulating a combat scenario where joint and combined efforts were required to suppress an advancing enemy.

In her address, the CS acknowledged the KDF’s commitment to safeguarding the nation and highlighted the importance of the pre-deployment training for AUSSOM. She emphasized that this training plays a pivotal role in ensuring mission success.

“I am confident that this training will provide you with a deeper understanding of the AUSSOM mandate, sharpening your comprehension of the mission’s objectives and how your roles contribute significantly to peace support operations in Somalia,” said Hon. Tuya.

She also pointed out that the Officer Cadet training focuses on three key pillars: character development, professional training, and academic studies. These elements aim to produce the next generation of military leaders with both professional competence and moral character. The CS noted that the training not only develops valuable skills but also fosters confidence, loyalty, respect, and a sense of service.

Hon. Tuya expressed her appreciation for the KDF’s ability to defend the nation, as demonstrated in the joint and combined arms live firing exercise. She assured the troops of the government’s unwavering support.

Lieutenant General David Tarus, the Commander Kenya Army, who also attended, stressed the importance of training in preparing soldiers to defend and safeguard the nation’s territorial integrity.

Brigadier Stephen Huria, the Artillery Brigade Commander and exercise director, highlighted the value of such exercises in building operational confidence. He congratulated the participants for their well-coordinated efforts, with particular regard for troop safety.

The exercise provided an opportunity for the soldiers to hone and perfect their operational skills, ensuring they are fully prepared for future missions.
