His Excellency, the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, presided over the closing ceremony of the second Africa Military Games on 30 November 2024 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
The event brought together over 20 member countries of the Organisation of Africa Military Sports Council (OSMA), under the guidance of the International Military Sports Council (CISM). This year’s edition aimed to replicate the success of the inaugural games held 22 years ago at Nairobi’s Kasarani National Stadium.
During the 12-day event, participants and spectators enjoyed excellent facilities and a spirited atmosphere that showcased the camaraderie and synergy among Africa’s military athletes.
In his address, Vice President Shettima lauded the participating nations for strengthening African collaboration and solidarity through sports. Emphasizing the games’ theme, “Enhancing Africa Military Cooperation Through Sports,” he called for more frequent editions to foster integration and partnership for peace, unity, and prosperity across African militaries.
“The objective of this event has been achieved. We endeavor to continue strengthening military ties and fostering unity to build a collaborative force of Africa’s military,” he remarked.
Kenya’s team, comprising 87 officials and competitors across seven disciplines out of the 19 accredited events, delivered a stellar performance. They broke the record set in 2002, securing an impressive total of 50 medals: 21 gold, 17 silver, and 12 bronze. This feat earned them third place overall, with Nigeria and Algeria taking the first and second positions, respectively.
Kenya’s achievements extended to new areas, with notable performances in volleyball, kickboxing, and field events:
In their continental debut, the kickboxers achieved commendable results at Abuja’s Velodrome Arena. Cpl Melckzedeck Milimo won gold in the 81kg category, while Cpl Linus Otieno and Cpl Susan Odwar claimed silver in the 71kg and women’s categories, respectively.
The volleyball team excelled in a round-robin tournament featuring seven teams. A highlight was their dramatic comeback victory against Ghana, winning a thrilling five-set match. Though they lost to Algeria in the finals (3-1 sets), they secured a silver medal. Cpl Bernard Wechuli was named the Most Valuable Player for his exceptional skills and energy.
Sgt Dominic Abuda made history in the hammer throw with a distance of 57.03 meters, while Lance Cpl Sarah Atieno earned gold in the shot put with a throw of 14.63 meters.
Kenya’s prowess in athletics shone brightly, especially in the relay events. The men’s 4x100m relay team clinched gold, while the 4x400m team secured silver. The women’s 4x400m team finished in fourth place.
Head of delegation Brigadier Elijah Gatere attributed the team’s success to thorough preparation, discipline, and mental strength. He praised the contingent for their sportsmanship and for flying Kenya’s flag high.
As the second edition of the Africa Military Games concluded, the event reinforced military culture, ethos, and camaraderie. It provided a unique platform for soldiers to interact, celebrate diversity, and strengthen bonds, promoting unity and esprit de corps among the African military community.
