Kenya continues to excel at the ongoing 2nd Africa Military Games in Abuja, Nigeria, emerging as a standout force in athletics, shooting, and boxing.
In shooting, the Kenyan women’s team shone at the Shitu Alao Barracks Range in Keffi, securing three silver medals in the 100-meter rifle events. Sergeant Agatha Muchiri earned gold in the 200-meter rifle standing competition and led the team to victory in the same event.
On the track, Gunner Meshack Babu clinched Kenya’s first gold in the 100m sprint with a time of 10.57 seconds. Babu, who also competed in the Olympic qualifiers, continues to build on his record. In the women’s 100m, Senior Private Loise Morara took bronze with a time of 12.00 seconds. The 5000m race saw Senior Private Cynthia Chepngeno win bronze, while Corporal Sela Jepleting narrowly missed a podium finish.
In field events, Sergeant Caroline Cherotich dominated the discus, throwing 48.00m to claim gold. Cherotich, a versatile athlete, also competes in high jump and has a history of top performances, including a strong showing at the 2015 World Military Games.
Kenya’s boxing team made waves at the Velodrome Arena in the MKO Abiola Stadium. Sergeant Edwin Okong’o defeated Nigeria’s Oladokun Oluwaseun in the semifinals to advance to the final against Libya’s Dawilu Asum. Four other Kenyan boxers, including Senior Private Friza Asiko (66kg welterweight) and Corporal Veronica Mbithe (50kg light flyweight), also reached the finals, highlighting Kenya’s strength in the ring.
In volleyball, the Kenyan team pulled off a remarkable comeback, defeating Ghana 5-2 after initially losing the first two sets, showcasing their determination and skill.
With several events still to come, Kenya’s athletes are poised to add even more medals to their impressive tally, bringing pride to their nation at the Africa Military Games.
