Over 200 golfers from various clubs across Kenya participated in the 2024 Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF) Cup at the Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort. This prestigious annual event, organized by the Kenya Defence Forces Golf Association (KDFGA) as part of the Ministry of Defence’s wellness initiatives, was graced by the Chief of the Defence Forces, General Charles Kahariri, who also played in the tournament.
The CDF Cup promotes physical fitness, camaraderie, and unity among Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel and civilians alike.
In his speech at the awards ceremony, General Kahariri expressed his appreciation to all participants for their dedication and enthusiasm, which he said elevate the standards of golf within the KDF. He highlighted the importance of promoting sportsmanship and fostering connections between military and civilian sectors. The General also extended his gratitude to the event’s hosts, sponsors, and partners for their support, underscoring the value of mutual partnerships in advancing sports and other development goals in Kenya.
Major General Erick Kinuthia, Chairperson of the KDFGA, commended participants for making the event a success, emphasizing that the tournament is both a showcase of skill and a networking opportunity for Kenya’s golfing community.
The tournament grouped participants into various “flights,” where golfers competed based on skill level and age. A distinguished flight included General (Rtd) Robert Kibochi, Lieutenant General (Rtd) Daniel Opande, and Lieutenant General (Rtd) Jackson Waweru.
Notable winners of the tournament included:
• KDFGA Division A: Major Elvis Murunga (winner), with Warrant Officer Class Two Marty Akorot as runner-up.
• KDFGA Division B: Colonel David Rumo.
• KDFGA Lady Winner: Captain Joy Njagi, followed by Sergeant Grace Kwamboka (runner-up) and Senior Private Christine Kamais (second runner-up).
• Senior Winner: General (Rtd) Robert Kibochi.
The event also saw participation from key figures such as National Security Advisor Ambassador Monicah Juma, Commander Kenya Army Lieutenant General David Keter, Commander Kenya Air Force Major General Fatuma Ahmed, and National Defence University-Kenya Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration and Finance, Major General Thomas Ng’ang’a.
Looking forward, Kenya is set to host the 16th edition of the International Military Sports Council (CISM) Military World Golf Championship in 2025, an event dedicated to enhancing military readiness and education through sports.
Additionally, KDF is currently represented by six members at the ongoing 2nd Africa Military Games in Abuja, Nigeria: Lieutenant Colonel Brian Omito, Captain Brian Tororei, Warrant Officer Class Two Kevin Mabele, Senior Sergeant Haron Wanyama, Sergeant Valine Akoth, and Sergeant Faith Muteti.
The CDF Cup exemplifies KDF’s dedication to fostering sportsmanship, fitness, and unity, laying a foundation for future growth in Kenya’s military and civilian golf spheres.
