KENYAN BOXER ADVANCES TO SEMIFINALS IN AFRICA MILITARY GAMES

The Kenya Defence Forces advanced their campaign at the 2024 2nd Africa Military Games in Abuja with a powerful performance as reigning African middleweight boxing champion, Sgt Edwin “Ocox” Okong’o, clinched a decisive quarterfinal victory. Competing in a highly anticipated East African derby, Okong’o outmanoeuvred Uganda’s Cpl Harold Mujkuye in an electrifying three-round bout at the Velodrome Arena, advancing to the semifinals.

The arena was filled with fervour as fans from both nations rallied behind their champions, creating an atmosphere full of song and dance. Cpl Mujkuye, Uganda’s 71kg national champion, started the match with aggressive tactics, but Okong’o controlled the tempo, displaying tactical skill and resilience in the first round. The Kenyan champion’s heavy, accurate punches proved overwhelming, as he strategically maintained dominance throughout the bout.

With a unanimous decision from the five-judge panel, Okong’o secured the win to the delight of Kenyan fans. He credited his success to the support of his training team, family, and fans. Head coach Ssgt Blackmoses Mathenge lauded Okong’o’s performance and emphasized that they have a solid strategy for subsequent bouts as they face increasingly formidable opponents.

This victory fuels Kenya’s hopes for further success in the boxing events as they continue their journey at the 2nd Africa Military Games.
