KENSIG-3 PERSONNEL GRADUATE FROM M-UAS TRAINING AT MONUSCO-GOMA

Three soldiers from Kenya Signals Company 3 (KENSIG-3) have successfully completed a Micro Unmanned Aircraft System (M-UAS) training at United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), Goma, an initiative aimed at enhancing the technical capabilities of peacekeeping personnel in reconnaissance, surveillance, and mission support. The training, which took place from October 21 to October 31, provided a comprehensive focus on quadcopter drones, including the Mavic 2 Pro, Mavic 2 Enterprise, and Mavic 3 Pro.

Representing KENSIG-3 were Sgt. Brian Ochieng, Sgt. Martin Mwirigi, and Cpl. Isaac Osanya, who, along with four other international participants, completed the specialized training. Their graduation underscores KENSIG-3’s commitment to advancing technical skills in support of peacekeeping operations.

Also attending the training were Capt. Awa Tamba, Maj. Sopheak Sok, and Lt. Col. Mohamed Taha from the Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) department.

Held at the Goma Lava site camp, the training was conducted by experienced instructors from the UN C4ISR’s Field Technology section, including Kan Athanase Yebouet, John Rugema, and Epaphrodite Utabajimana. The course featured both theoretical instruction and hands-on flying sessions, giving participants the confidence and expertise necessary to operate UAVs in various mission scenarios.

The M-UAS training program is part of the MONUSCO and UN C4ISR Academy for Peace Operations’ ongoing initiatives to strengthen peacekeeping capabilities. Ms. Florence Keter, Programme Manager for the United Nations C4ISR Academy for Peace Operations, presided over the closing ceremony and congratulated the trainees. She emphasized the responsible use of M-UAS technology to safeguard lives and combat threats, including crime and terrorism, within peacekeeping missions.

“We must use this advanced technology responsibly, employing M-UAS to safeguard lives and combat threats like crime and terrorism,” Ms. Keter remarked.
