The Principal Secretary for Defence, Dr. Patrick Mariru, has initiated the construction of 152 housing units at Mariakani Garrison, Mombasa County. This project aims to provide quality, decent housing for Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel as part of the first phase of a Public Private Partnership (PPP) framework, which targets the construction of 3,069 units across various locations.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Dr. Mariru emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to addressing the housing needs of KDF personnel, enabling them to carry out their duties efficiently.
“The Ministry appreciates the wonderful work you do in ensuring that our country is safe and our borders are secure for us to enjoy the peace we have. The least we can do is to ensure that you and your families live in quality houses for you to execute your mandate effectively,” said Dr. Mariru.
The project includes both single lines and married quarters. Dr. Mariru also noted that additional housing sites are currently under construction in Roysambu (Nairobi), Kwa Mbuzi (Nanyuki), Lanet, and Gilgil (Nakuru). He highlighted that the initiative would create job opportunities for local youth and support suppliers across multiple industries by using locally sourced construction materials, aligning with the National Government’s housing goals.
Major General Luka Kuto, General Officer Commanding Eastern Command, commended the project, stating it would significantly boost the morale of service personnel. “There has been a steady growth in the military but there hasn’t been a commensurate provision of housing units. Projects like this will enable our soldiers to access decent housing,” said Major General Kuto. He also reaffirmed KDF’s dedication to its mandate, contributing to the nation’s security and socioeconomic development.
The ceremony was attended by senior officials, including Brigadier Titus Sokobe, Chief of Infrastructure at Defence Headquarters, Brigadier Joseph Mokwena, Mariakani Garrison Commander, as well as senior officers, officers, service members and their families.
