DHQ WELFARE AND COMPENSATION HOSTS SEMINAR

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) Welfare and Compensation (W&C) held a one-day seminar on October 3, 2024, at the in Karen, Nairobi. The event, officially opened by Major General David Keter, the Assistant Chief of the Defence Forces in charge of Personnel and Logistics (ACDF P&L), brought together Welfare and Compensation Officers from the Kenya Army, Air Force, and Navy. The purpose of the seminar was to discuss their roles, responsibilities, and the challenges they face.

In his opening address, Maj Gen Keter emphasized the dual responsibilities of military officers, noting the importance of both leadership and personnel welfare.
“As military officers, we are entrusted not only with the defense of our nation but also with the well-being of those we lead. The strength and effectiveness of our forces are greatly influenced by the care and support provided to our personnel,” he stated.

The seminar included a presentation by Lt Col Joseph Macharia, Staff Officer at DHQ W&C, who explained the structure and responsibilities of the welfare and compensation framework within the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF). He emphasized the essential role that Welfare and Compensation Officers play in coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating welfare programs across the KDF.

“The aim of the W&C scheme is to boost the confidence and morale of our officers and service personnel, which in turn enhances operational effectiveness and efficiency,” Lt Col Macharia noted.
Key attendees included Brigadier Edward Nyamao, Chief of Welfare and Compensation; Brigadier Joakim Mwamburi, Chief of Defence Forces Old Comrades Association (DEFOCA); Brigadier Nehemiah Kemei, Chief of Defence Savings and Credit Co-operative Society (DESACCO); Moses Lenari, Chief of Defence Forces Medical Insurance Scheme (DEFMIS); representatives from the Military Wives Association of Kenya (MWAK); senior officers; and other key personnel from DHQ.
