The 2nd Council of Ministers Meeting was co-chaired today by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Hon. Soipan Tuya, and Italy’s Minister for Enterprises and Made in Italy, Hon. Senator Adolfo Urso, at the Luigi Broglio Malindi Space Centre, in Malindi.
The meeting focused on advancing the implementation of the Kenya-Italy Bilateral Agreement concerning the Luigi Broglio Space Centre. CS Tuya underscored the significant role the facility has played in strengthening ties between the two nations. She emphasized Kenya’s willingness to integrate into the ‘Mattei Plan for Africa,’ positioning itself as a model in areas such as education, training, agriculture, health, energy, water, and space cooperation.
Additionally, CS Tuya noted that the Space Centre is crucial for using earth observation data to inform decision-making, planning, monitoring, and predictive analytics across various sectors like agriculture, environmental management, natural resource management, climate change, and national security. She also expressed appreciation to the Italian government for supporting Kenyan space professionals, notably through the 14 PhD scholarships awarded to Kenyans who will soon commence their studies.
Minister Urso reiterated Italy’s commitment to fully implementing the agreement and expressed gratitude to Kenya for its continued support.
The meeting was attended by key officials, including Defence Principal Secretary Dr. Patrick Mariru, Director General of Defence National Security Industries Major General Benard Waliaula, Board Chair of the Kenya Space Agency Major General (Rtd) James Aruasa, Director General of the Kenya Space Agency Brigadier Hillary Kipkosgei, Chief Legal Officer Brigadier Yvonne Kerubo, and other senior representatives from both nations.
