Schools in Baringo County are seeing a surge in enrollment as peace and security improve in the North Rift region. Learners who had previously abandoned their studies due to banditry are returning, thanks to enhanced security efforts by a multi-agency team and the renovation of schools by Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops as part of Operation Maliza Uhalifu (OMU).
A recent spot check by KDF in schools such as Arabal, Kapindasum, Mukutani, Chemoril, and Chesitet revealed a steady increase in student numbers, with communities resuming their normal routines. Joel Kipkwony, headteacher of Arabal Primary, noted that students from both Baringo and Laikipia counties are now enrolling, living and studying together harmoniously.
Arabal Assistant Chief, Emily Kimoi, confirmed that many community members have returned and are resuming their usual activities after being displaced. She credited the improved security to the efforts of the multi-agency team.
John Rutto, headmaster of Chemoril Won Primary School, also emphasized the positive impact of the prevailing peace, highlighting how learners from distant areas like Paka are enrolling without fear of attacks.
Sheila Cherito, headteacher of Chesitet Primary, pointed out that access to medical care and food has encouraged enrollment. She thanked KDF for their ongoing support, especially in providing medical assistance and food donations. Cherito also appealed to the government to sustain the school feeding program, which she believes is vital for keeping children in school.
While addresing the learners at Chemoril Won Primary, Brigadier S M Huria, OMU Commander, called upon both the learners and the teaching staff to be peace ambassadors in their respective areas noting that peace is a key component for achieving sustainable development.
“A peaceful society provides a healthy socioeconomic environment for people to flourish, leading to sustainable development,” he added.
