On September 21, 2024, a team from the Kenya Navy participated in the global International Coastal Clean-Up (ICC) Day by engaging in beach clean-up activities across various coastal regions. This annual event, held on the third Saturday of September, aims to protect marine ecosystems and ensure coastlines remain free of trash.
The clean-up, led by Deputy Commander of the Kenya Navy, Brigadier Sankale Kiswaa, brought together a diverse group of participants, including representatives from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), local communities, schools, government agencies, and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). The group worked collectively to remove plastics, discarded nets, and other harmful debris from the shoreline.
During his address, Brigadier Kiswaa emphasized the critical role of the Kenyan coastline in supporting a rich and diverse marine ecosystem. He noted its economic importance for the local population.
“The coastal areas are not only a national treasure but also a source of economic activity for the local community. By keeping our beaches clean, we ensure the long-term sustainability of this resource,” Brig Kiswaa said.
Further, he urged local communities to take an active role in protecting the coastal environment by adopting responsible waste management practices, such as proper disposal of waste and reducing plastic use. Brigadier Kiswaa underscored the connection between a clean coastline and the well-being of future generations, calling for collective action in preserving the environment.
The Kenya Navy’s participation highlighted its commitment not only to national security but also to environmental sustainability and the collaborative efforts required to maintain healthy oceans, ensuring the long-term prosperity of coastal communities.
By the end of the clean-up, the team had collected over 1,400 kilograms of plastics and debris.
Also present at the event were Commander of Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe, Brigadier Abraham Biwott, Kenya Navy Chief of Medical Services Brigadier (Dr.) Justino Muinde, alongside other Officers and Sailors.
