The Department of Human Resource Management and Development (HRM&D) has wrapped up a five-day mentorship and sensitization programme for civilian staff working in Nanyuki, Laikipia and Isiolo military establishments.
The programme spearheaded by the Director of HRM&D from Defence Headquarters Dr. Lilian Nzavi was aimed at sensitizing the staff on the upcoming Policy on Integrated Defence Workforce that is on course, national values and principles of governance, alcohol and drug abuse, cyber hygiene, skills gap analysis and upholding work ethics among others.
Speaking during the sessions, the Director of Public Communications from the Defence Headquarters Mr Bogita Ongeri who represented the Principal Secretary Mr. Patrick Mariru urged the staff to work with diligence, integrity and commitment.
He affirmed that the Ministry values the hard work the civilian staff apply in supporting the Kenya Defence Forces towards the achievement of their Constitutional mandate.
“In everything you do, ensure you serve with integrity, intelligence and with energy. Be committed to what you do and understand the responsibilities that come with working in the security sector,” said Mr. Ongeri.
“In whatever you do, please know that in one day or the other you’re contributing to the overall mandate of the Ministry which is to defend and protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Kenya,” he added.
He implored the staff to endevour in adding their knowledge through constant training saying they should not be satisfied with low cadres but they should dare to further their education and if possible redesignate.
“Do feel satisfied holding a lower cadre when you have the ability to go back to school, get papers and redesignate to other cadres. Challenge yourself by going back to school, obtain additional certificates since education is an endless journey,” said the Director.
His sentiments were echoed by Dr. Nzavi who commended the staff for being industrious in the discharge of their duties saying her Department remains steadfast in supporting them and addressing their plight.
She underscored that the Policy on Integrated Defence Workforce is at an advanced stage saying it shall cure most of the human resource challenges spread across all cadres of the civilian component in the Ministry.
“We have a very supportive leadership who appreciate what we do. If you’re a cook or a cleaner, you are all important in this Ministry and your work is recognized and highly appreciated,” Dr. Nzavi emphasized.
Brigadier Joel Arimi, the Brigade Commander, Armourer in Isiolo commended the MoD leadership for coming up with the programme saying it was a critical gesture towards understanding the challenges the staff go through in various regions.
The sensitization visit to the region was preceded by another in the coastal region at Kenya Navy Headquarters, Mtongwe. The programme is set to be extended to Nakuru, Eldoret, Nairobi and Thika regions in the coming weeks.
