Today, troops from the Kenya Navy stationed at Manda Base, Lamu County partook in cycling and swimming competitions organized by the Manda Base.
The sporting events are meant to foster and strengthen teamwork, unity, and good working relations between the KDF tri-services and among commissioned officers and service members.
Addressing the troops before flagging off the cycling competition, Manda base commander Brigadier Peter Chelimo urged the cyclists to check on their personal safety and the safety of their colleagues during the race, as most participants lacked appropriate cycling gear.
“Despite the short notice of today’s event, I’m impressed by the big number of cyclists that have turned up and this proves your enthusiasm and spirit to keep fit and healthy, I’m really impressed.” He said.
The 28km cycling competition had 30 participants, among them two servicewomen who defied the scorching heating of the coastal sun and competed against their male counterparts. The race saw Lt. Kariuki clinch first position, followed by Sgt Keitany and Spte Ochieng respectively.
In the swimming competition, soldiers competed in the front crawl, backstroke, side stroke, breaststroke and underwater and object recovery with the winners in each category awarded respectively.
“Today’s events have demonstrated the true spirit of teamwork and comradeship. My appeal to you is to embrace sportsmanship not only to keep you fit and healthy, but also as a medium to learn respect for others and self-control. These skills can help you manage many other parts of your life. They’re also key to becoming a mature, respectful, and successful person.” the Base Commander added.
OAB Commander Col. Tanui echoed his sentiments and urged the soldiers to utilize the resources available at the base to keep on training. “Being fit in the military is not an option, we should never get tired of training as this is our lifestyle and we should all embrace it wholeheartedly.” Said Col. Tanui.
Present during the events was Deputy Base Commander Col. Bernard Kumba, Senior officers, security agency Commanders, and Soldiers from both the Kenya Navy and 8th Brigade of Kenya Army.
