Defence Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale has underscored the strategic importance of a secure and stable Horn of Africa for social economic development.
The CS reiterated that the region has a huge untapped potential but faces significant security threats ranging from terrorism, cyber crime, human and drug trafficking as well as proliferation of small arms, among others.
Hon. Duale made the remarks today at the Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC) Karen, Nairobi, where he delivered a lecture of opportunity to the students entitled ‘New Dawn in the Horn: Inching Towards Peace in the Region’.
The CS made an elaborate presentation of the strategic security environment of the region and the various trends influencing the security situation saying Kenya continues to provide leadership voice in regional organizations like the East African Community (EAC) and the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
“Kenya is committed actively in the participation of peace stabilization processes in the region as evidenced by our presence in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Somalia, and Ethiopia peace talks. Kenya believes economic prosperity is directly linked to peace and security in our neighbourhood,” said Hon. Duale.
The Cabinet Secretary noted that there’s an urgent necessity to harness the youth potential, which remains unemployed, thus making them prone to radicalization and recruitment to terrorist groups.
“There’s also the need to leverage on technology since the enemy is using the sophisticated technology. We should upscale the security infrastructure to combat the modern-day security threat,” said the CS.
He maintained that Kenya shall continue to collaborate with her regional and global allies for sustainable peace and economic prosperity in the region and beyond.
Present during the occasion were JCSC Commandant Major General Maison Nkoimo, Chief of Strategic Plans and Policy Brigadier Richard Mwanzia, and Senior Directing Staff at the College among others.
