Kenya Defence Forces medical personnel operating under ‘Operation Maliza Uhalifu’ (OMU) in conjunction with Medical Missions Africa (MeMA) and Multi Destination Mission (MDM) successfully conducted a three-day free medical camp in Turkana County.
The exercise covered the areas of Lomelo, Kapedo and Adoket Adome Wards, where residents benefited from consultation and treatment of both acute and chronic cases, general medical check-up, nutritional assessment and deworming. The locals were also educated on hygiene, proper nutrition, importance of antenatal care, birth preparedness and regular clinic visits. The medical team managed to attend to over 800 residents from the three wards, majority of whom were women, children and the elderly. The conditions treated were mostly upper respiratory tract infections, diarrhea illnesses, muscular skeletal disorders, ENT and skin conditions.
Led by the Officer Commanding 12 Engineers Squadron Major David Wema, the residents were sensitized on the importance of peaceful co-existence with their neighboring communities and also engaging and supporting development projects from the government and Non-governmental organization (NGOs) in a bid to bolster their socio-economic life. School children who also presented themselves for general checkups were vitalized to continue embracing education as their key to a successful life and urged to encourage and influence their peers who haven’t yet enrolled in schools.
In his remarks, the Officer Commanding emphasized on the need for local residents to cooperate with the security agencies by providing any intelligence information or anything suspicious to be a threat to security. “We will continue to work closely with the residents, in terms of developments, medical camps and other initiatives supporting our socio-economic lives. So i urge you to cooperate and support the security agencies working around you so that normalcy is back in this region,” he underscored.
Notably, the locals expressed their gratitude, appreciating all the CIMIC activities that has ongoing since the Multi agency operation was inaugurated. ” We have seen so many developments, medical support, water projects, opening up of roads and security heightened in this region. We don’t take it for granted and we will continue to support you anytime our efforts are required. We have experienced a very cordial relationship between the residents and the security agencies,” said Mr. Jackson Ekwang, Chief Lomelo ward.
The Multi agency team operating under ‘Operation Maliza Uhalifu’ continues with the Civilian Military cooperation in the disturbed counties, in exertion to maintaining the good rapport between the local residents and security agencies as part of finding a lasting solution to the incessant banditry.
