EACRF FORCE COMMANDER BRIEFS UNSC MEMBERS ON EASTERN DRC SECURITY SITUATION

The East African Community Regional Force (EACRF) Commander Major General Jeff Nyagah on Saturday, 11 March 23 briefed the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) members visiting Goma, on the security situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

During the meeting, the Force Commander informed the UNSC members of EACRF’s re-posturing of troops within Rutshuru and Masisi territories, now designated as a multinational sector, to enhance robust operations in collaboration with the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), in order to address the current threat posed by the Armed Groups. The re-posturing was approved by the East Africa Community (EAC) Heads of State on 17th February 2023 during the mini-summit held in Addis Ababa upon the recommendations of the East Africa Community Chiefs of Defence Forces/Chief of Defence Staff.

He apprised them of EACRF’s mandate, current milestones, areas of collaboration with MONUSCO and FARDC, the current humanitarian situation and the proposed way forward in the restoration of peace and stability in Eastern DRC.

The UNSC members reaffirmed the support of the International Community to the ongoing peace and stability efforts in Eastern DRC.

While in Kinshasa, the members held talks with DRC Head of State President Felix Tshisekedi Tshilombo, presidential candidates, Civil Society and other government and non-governmental officials.
