A Joint Bureau comprising the Ad Hoc Committee, Expanded Joint Verification Mechanism (EJVM), East Africa Community Regional Force (EACRF) and the East Africa Community Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (EACMVM) on Thursday, 9th March visited Sake and Mubambiro in North Kivu within Masisi territory.
Led by Lieutenant General Joao Nassone and accompanied by EACRF Commander Major General Jeff Nyagah the Joint Bureau conducted an assessment and verification of the violations of the ceasefire and security situation leading to fatalities reported on Monday, 6th March 2023.
The ceasefire by all parties was directed by the Heads of State during the mini-summit held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia towards facilitating the withdrawal of M23 and conduct of Demobilization, Disarmament, Community Recovery and Stabilization Program (P-DDRCS) of all Armed Groups in Eastern DRC.
Lieutenant General Joao Nassone informed the parties present that his delegation is to verify facts towards accurate reporting on adherence or breach of the ceasefire as directed by the Heads of State.
Both leaders condemned the recent heinous acts targeting innocent civilians saying the visit by the EJMV team is critical in obtaining facts for accurate reporting towards identifying the perpetrators for an informed decision-making.
Later, the Force Commander visited the Burundian Contingent that deployed to Sake on Sunday 5th March 2023 and encouraged them to remain committed to the execution of the EACRF mandate.
“You can count on the Force Headquarters for any support you require towards implementing the EACRF mandate. All we ask of you is to remain focused on the task ahead,” he told the commander of the troops Lieutenant Colonel Zino Dismas.
